Community Quarterlies with Coach Kim | 1st Quarter

Aloha Team! Thanks for checking in with my quarterly newsletter. This quarter we are focusing on February thru April. February 10, 2024 marks the start of the Lunar New Year of the Wood Dragon. The dragon is the only mythical creature in the zodiac. The Dragon is a symbol of power, nobility, honor, success and luck. General lucky colors for this year are red, white, yellow, and gold! From all determinations, 2024 is set to be a prosperous and wealthy year!


How do we achieve this prosperity? If you are like me, you have a laundry list of things that you need to do every day. What I have done is created a business checklist for myself that contains seven items that I “want” to do daily – on top of my regular duties. From those seven, I made four of them “must do’s” and try to complete them before lunchtime. If I complete those four items, I have “won the day”. Steven Covey and many other motivational speakers talk about habits. According to Covey, you need to perform an action daily for six weeks to create a habit. As we press forward in 2024, it is important to always have a game plan to capture the success that awaits.

MARKET SNAPSHOT

2024 has started where 2023 left off. The market remains strong as we move through the multiple changes with interest rates. Compared to January 2023, single family home sales are up 22.7% and condo/townhouse sales are up 6.2%. The needs of housing in Hawaii continue to be a struggle. The supply cannot keep up with the demand.

With this main factor, prices here remain strong with the median single family home price at $1,021,016 and the median condo price at $502,500. According to economist Dr. Eisenberg, we will continue to see higher prices as supply is less than demand. Construction costs have risen 40% since COVID and the industry is building homes with a higher baseline. Dr. Eisenberg also felt that interest rates will probably be steady through the spring and possibly not drop until the summer – May or June. We will keep you posted! NEIGHBORHOOD SPOTLIGHT: KAILUA

Kailua, for me, represents the days of my youth. I spent many weekends playing in the surf at Kailua Beach. From catching fish in Kaelepulu Stream, to building sandcastles on the shore, learning to boogie board and body surf at Kalamas to just walking the beautiful sandy beach -the water always soothed my soul. But, there is so much more to Kailua than just the beach! So many quaint shops, Mom and Pop eateries and a bevy of history make Kailua a spectacular place. The name Kailua is derived from the Hawaiian words “Kai” meaning sea or sea water and “ ‘elua” meaning two. The two currents converge in Kailua Bay’s crystal clear aquamarine waters and dance on its crescent shaped shore. Lesser known, Kailua is also home to the largest emergent remaining wetland in the islands. At over 800 acres, Kawainui Marsh is home to endemic and endangered birds and is very culturally significant. My great grandparents lived on the cusp of the marsh near where Hanale Place is now. Kailua is also home to three bird sanctuaries (Popoia Island, Moku Nui, and Moku Iki), many hiking trails, surfing, kitesurfing, windsurfing, paddling, fishing, breweries and a distillery! Fun fact: there is a plane wreck on its shallow shores that you can paddle out to!

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

As part of my 2024 goals, I have decided to continue my community outreach. I am currently one the office representatives for the Coldwell Banker Cares Foundation – an agent and employee charitable organization that works with several charities throughout the year.


February, we are collecting donations for the Oahu SPCA.
March, ladies – clean out those closets! We will be hosting a donation drive for the YWCA Dress for Success program. Clothing is provided to those women entering the job force with little to no resources. This program helps them dress for their interview and provides them with their first few work outfits and pieces! It is a great organization.


April – We will be holding a workshop for Ho’omalu Safe Haven – a charity that helps foster children 18-26 transition into society after they exit the foster care program. It helps to provide resources and skill building! If you have an magazines, we would be happy to collect them!

 

And as always – I’m coaching for Kaneohe AYSO. AYSO is my passion project. All three of my children participate in the fall core program and two of my children are lucky enough to participate in the spring select season. I am blessed to be able to spend time with them, other community members, and our keiki!
